TOPIC: installng crossband repeater at Mike area

installng crossband repeater at Mike area 13 years 2 months ago #364

This weekend Ap2ARS/C and myself went to service the existing 2 meter repeater and installed a crossband VHF/UHF repeater.

The task seemed fairly easy on the paper however it became very challenging fine tuning the equipment.

2 Meter co-ax cables were ok. The repeater was checked and it was operating normal. The antennas were inspected and things were in order.

Dual band Comet GP-6 antenna was installed on the roof. The cable (100 feet) was carefully run down to the ground floor away from the generator exhaust...(Generator exhaust destroyed our previous cable as we never expected that it would give out so much heat):)

Once the hardware installation was carried out it was already dark and the temperature dropped to zero degrees.

Kenwood TMV 71 A was used as a cross band repeater. Some serious interference was witnessed after connecting the power supply, which took us more then 2 hours to diagnose. We had taken along a back up supply as well which would also turn the protection light on.

After due deliberations and discussions with AP2NK we connected both the systems to one power supply and viola, it was resolved. The mystery was never solved and neither were we interested at that time since the temperature went below zero at that time 

Signal reports were provided as 5-9 from Islamabad and 5-5 from Faisalabad.

We left for Islamabad after 8pm and AP2NK was kind enough to give us escort via radio till we reached his QTH.

Special thanks to AP2RF and AP2GH for providing ground support despite their hectic schedule at work.

One more point to mention; Had a 5-5 Qso with AP2RF and AP2GH on simplex UHF almost 1500 feet below the repeater location. That was mind blowing and the only reason we could think of was the valley helping the signal to be converging at the given place.

Anyhow both the setups; vhf 2meter and cross band 70cm/2meter are now up and running and the frequency can be obtained from PARS management.

Enjoy Clicking ;)
